Invasions of the Kingdom
Hoysala Empire
Circa 1300 CE
With the onslaught of Mughal invasions in the 13th century, the Kolada Matha needed a strong defense mechanism to protect it from being destroyed. The kshatriya (warrior) kings of the Hoysala Empire boldly protected Hinduism in all forms, even risking their own life.
The Hoysala kingdom would later give birth to the Vijayanagara Kingdom, that would also be a strong defense against Muslim invasions until the 16th century CE.
Circa 1565 CE
Loss of sovereignty of the Hindu Kingdom Vijayanagara to the Sultanate of Golconda.
Kolada Matha in the Medieval Era
The Mysore Maharaja was initiated by the Kolada Matha and studied there for many days under the tutelage of the guru. The regent kings of the entire region revered the Kolada Mutt for its highest wisdom and sought advice for their major decision- making. They also made valuable donations to the Kolada Matha to help sustain the heritage through the age of destruction that was to come. The Kolada Matha in turn trained the next generation of Hindu ministers and religious leaders who would serve the kingdom as guardians of the Hindu Dharma.
Tipu Sultan & The Genocide of Hindus
Tipu Sultan was responsible for the genocide of many Hindu communities within South India. He was known to blindly massacre entire villages, including women and children, using the most inhumane and barbaric methods. His goal was to cleanse the region of the Hindu population, establishing Islam as the only dominion.
Circa 1761 CE
Hyder Ali became the defacto ruler of Mysore, and took control of most of Karnataka under whom Hindus were massacred, people were made to flee their home, and women were raped.
1767 -1799
3 Anglo-Mysore wars were fought between Hyder Ali, his son Tipu Sultan, and British East India Company where Hindus were forced to fight and were killed.
Circa 1799 CE
3 Anglo-Mysore wars were fought between Hyder Ali, his son Tipu Sultan, and British East India Company where Hindus were forced to fight and were killed.
1876 – 1877
Under direct British rule, a devastating famine struck the region due to the cruel colonial economic policies, which took the lives of around one million people, one fifth of the population at the time.
1947
When India became independent, the Kingdom of Mysore was annexed under the State, the final loss for this Hindu Kingdom.
Illegal annexation of the adi peetha sarvajnapeetha
For generations, the kings of Mysore, known as Maharajas, were ceremoniously initiated by the Kolada Matha. Regent rulers across the region held the Kolada Matha in the highest regard for its profound wisdom, often seeking its counsel for pivotal decisions. The history of the Mysore kingdom thus tells the history of the Adi Peetha Sarvajnapeetha:
- 1767 – 1799 | 3 Anglo-Mysore wars were fought between Hyder Ali, his son Tipu
- Sultan, and British East India Company. These wars exacted a heavy toll on the Hindu populace, who were coerced into armed service and often meeting tragic fates on the battlefield.
- Under the dominion of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, a dark shadow of religious persecution loomed over the land. Hindu soldiers were forcibly converted to Islam prior to engaging in warfare. Many temples were destroyed or desecrated due to religious intolerance.
- 1947 | After India gained independence from Britain in 1947, the Indian states were reorganized under Article 370 of the Constitution of India. The Maharajah Jayachamarajendra was coerced into signing the instrument of accession, a treaty deemed illegal, as it exceeded his rightful authority to sign.
